My Next Main Desktop Computer

Computers, Technology 1 Comment

Here are some thoughts that I’ve had for my next computer. I am always planning computers; dream computers, hugely insane computers, supercomputers, budget computers, practical computers (bang for the buck computers), and systems that I would actually buy.

Well, computers to me are obviously the most important thing so I have to have them just right. That is why I’m announcing today my plans for my next computer system. When do I plan to build my next computer? I was originally targeting summer 2008, but after a recent upgrade to my current desktop computer, I think I may be able to hold off a new system until summer 2009 with nothing more than a graphics card upgrade at some point (when prices come down even more on nVidia 8-series). I decided to hold off a whole extra year because so much is going to be happening in the world of computers between now and then. So… here is my current plan:

Target Budget: $1000 (this always gets fine tuned towards final purchase)

-min 8 cores (will come down to AMD or Intel based on who has the best at the time, hopefully AMD)
-min 8GB DDR3 or more (waiting for triple channel, so could become 12GB, we’ll see)
-Dual Socket Motherboard to provide very good ability to upgrade in the future… and to be badass.

Beyond that, it is rather difficult to say what will be around in a year and a half. For all I know, I may look back at this post and laugh at how small I was thinking.

Additionally to these specs, I am hoping to be able to actually keep my current desktop system running as a secondary computer, maybe even get a KVM, thought dual screen DVI KVMs are pretty pricey.

To reward myself for not getting a computer this summer, I think I may get an Asus EEE and/or something else really cool.
