Let me know if there are any problems.

Sometimes it’s a challenge

Life, Ramblings No Comments

Sometimes it’s a challenge to pretend that someone is right or that you agree with them.

You know what I’m talking about? You know… when you’re in one of those situations where it would be inconvenient to disagree with someone… or when you might sound dumb for disagreeing because you’re probably the only one in a group that disagrees.

It’s really tough sometimes.

Why does this crap happen?

So… Memorial day is… today. I’ve come back home for the day just to handle things back at home…

I wasn’t planning to turn on my desktop… but I suddenly discovered I had to find something that was on my desktop. So I turned it on and I’m greeted by a sorts of weird issues. First… my BIOS said something about being in safe mode… as in something went wrong with the overclocking. I have to wonder if for some reason my system had a little trouble overclocking after being off for so long. I’m not completely sure why that would be, but that’s just the first issue. I overclocked it back to where it should be and it seems fine.

Then Vista proceeded to boot. It booted up normally… and upon login in I discover that everything is messed up… nothing like how I left it. It’s all complaining about crap that I have no desire or care about. My sidebar gadgets are all messed up. And everything seems so slow! Windows is loading and grinding endlessly. It’s as if it’s happy to see me or something.

I’m beginning to think it might be better to leave it turned on while I’m gone for the the remainder of the summer just so it isn’t a pain when I come back. When I say on… I mean shut down, but power still being provided by the power supply to keep the mother board all happy.

Oh well. It just added to things I had to deal with.

Sometimes you have to wonder…

…if people you thought were actually good friends even give a shit. The lack of returned calls for weeks at a time and the complete lack of contact– those things make you wonder.

What better time than college to discover those people? It’s OK. I’ll move on.

Costing More ≠ Better and/or perfect

Computers, Ramblings, Technology No Comments

People often think that spending more money on something means that it will work better than something is cheaper. That is not always the case. Especially when it comes to computers. I see people sometimes yelling at their computers for not working right and claiming that they should not have to put up with something not working because they paid so much for their computer. Believe it or not… cost of computer has no connection at all to how the software works or doesn’t work. Yes, hardware may have more of a connection to cost, but even then there is hardware failure or other problems that don’t care how much you spent on it.

I have cursed at my computers before for not behaving as expected and it is always out of frustration. We probably all have. But I am a very knowledgeable technology oriented person. When I am relaxed and take the time to understand what I am doing, I am most effective.

Basically, frustration doesn’t get things done faster in the world of computers. If anything it makes things take longer. Sure, there can be technical problems that happen anytime, but it seems they happen less when you aren’t frustrated. I’m sure you’ve all experienced your computer being “retarded” when you need it most, such as for that last minute project or something. If possible, try to calm down and not be in so much of a hurry. Things might go smoother.

This is also the same type of thing where people spend more on a TV and thinking it will have a better picture than something that is cheaper or spending endless amounts of money on audio equipment thinking it will sound better. Or to the person that spends large amounts of money on a monster cable because it has gold tips. (Monster cables are generally very good cables, but there is also a lot of marketing hype and mark up on them). These examples boil down to research and just plain knowledge. It’s just like the person that thinks they are a big shot because they own a hummer. When in reality they are struggling to pay for it and/or its gas– we all point and say “sucks to be you” when we see a hummer these days.

Cedar Point Tuesday

Life No Comments

Hahaha! I’m going to Cedar Point tomorrow! I can’t wait! It’s gonna rock!

Update: It was awesome. I rode everything I wanted to ride except the Raptor… because it shut down after waiting an hour in line. The Dragster was closed all day… but in the last hour they decided to open it and I was lucky enough to be close enough to get a decent spot in line and I got my completely awesome ride on it! That ride rules!

And for people that haven’t gotten a chance to ride the Maverick… It is absolutely recommended. It is such a good ride. It was worth the approximate 1.5 hour wait.

And on the down side… I got horribly sun/wind burned.

Virus Scanners?

Computers 1 Comment

My brother has recently been grumbling about his virus scanner. Apparently it had a bug in it that was causing him great distress (which is never a good thing for me because I have to deal with his computer troubles usually). Well… me managed to figure out what the problem was, but there is no way to fix it, I guess. So he investigated other virus scanners out there. Long story short… he can’t find anything that he likes.

What do I tell him? Well… in my opinion virus scanners are useless. On my Vista desktop, I have AVG free installed for when I feel I should scan something. I don’t leave it running in the background scanning everything I do because that would slow stuff down. My brother argues that if it were a good virus scanner it wouldn’t slow anything down. And I say that it is impossible for a virus scanner to not slow something down at least slightly.

I’m still urging him to just go without a scanner, but he claims it’s a good thing to have one. To prove this, he made a quick google search for some “fake viruses” and showed that his virus scanner picked it up. I was not impressed because they are fake viruses, with fake definitions put in there to show that a virus scanner works. That says nothing about whether it will catch all viruses.

I also concluded that even if my Vista desktop caught a virus… that would be an opportunity for me to reinstall Vista… something that is often a good idea and has been for all versions of Windows. And I have good karma with computers… and I have a good sense of when something isn’t right. I don’t need a virus scanner to tell me. Also, if a virus hit my desktop… it’ll only take out that computer. I’ll still have several other computers to turn to if I needed a computer in a hurry. So the inconvenience is not a factor for me.

I also think there is a strong possibility that most viruses are written by the virus scanner companies themselves. I don’t know this for sure, but it’s possible.

To conclude… have a virus scanner around when you need to quickly scan something, but don’t have one that runs all the time. Or if you aren’t careful about what you do on the internet, then sure… waste money and performance on a virus scanner.
