Is Ubuntu usable enough for a non-tech-savvy girlfriend yet?

Computers, Dugg, Linux, Technology No Comments

I recently read an interesting article (found on digg.com) that showed how someone that is not tech savvy can use ubuntu. Overall, I was impressed by how usable it really was for her. However, I think that the article also points out some minor usability flaws with Ubuntu as seen by the average Joe users. That is probably the best way to find these kind of issues and improve upon them. Very cool!

I think Ubuntu has really earned its title over the years. It has become my distribution of choice both for its ease of use and manageability. I use it on my server…. and when I get a gaming console and give up PC gaming (for the most part)… I will probably use Ubuntu on my desktop… making my life completely Unix based… with Windows on the side in a virtual machine.

Science Teacher Fired for Not Teaching Creationism

Dugg, News, School, Science No Comments

While I can believe this actually happened… it doesn’t mean it is right:

Chris Comer, a Science Teacher in Texas was Expelled for not teaching Intelligent Design in her science class. It’s a scary day indeed when our science teachers get fired for recognizing that creationism is not science.

I hope this lady fights this until she gets her job back.

Creationism is NOT science. Therefore it should NOT be taught in a science class… or anywhere for that matter. Leave it to the insane people to try and “spread the word.”

Oyster packaging is out of style

Dugg, News, Ramblings, Technology No Comments

I recently read an interesting article on oyster packaging… you know– those stupid packages with your product being protected by this nearly impossible to open plastic. This article was talking about how these are soon going to disappear… to which I cheer!

It also mentioned how there are several companies out there that have already turned away from them. The most notable that I can think of is Apple, Inc. I actually can’t think of when they had any oyster packaging. Maybe back before I paid any attention to Apple, but for some reason I doubt it. When I got my Might Mouse and my iPod Nano from them, both of them were the most pleasant thing I have ever opened. There was no fighting to get to the product inside. I can’t say that for that flash drive I recently opened, or that USB hub, or that bluetooth headset, or even my new pen.

I personally can’t wait for these packages to be redesigned for the better. And I don’t think anyone would like to see them stay.
