I upgraded the server’s OS from Ubuntu Server 7.10 to 8.04 today. I know it messed with apache’s configuration a bit, and updated a bunch of stuff, so problems are likely. I’ve already found at least 1 problem, so… definitely let me know if you notice anything weird and I will do my best to fix it!
Is Ubuntu usable enough for a non-tech-savvy girlfriend yet?
April 28th, 2008Computers, Dugg, Linux, Technology No CommentsI recently read an interesting article (found on digg.com) that showed how someone that is not tech savvy can use ubuntu. Overall, I was impressed by how usable it really was for her. However, I think that the article also points out some minor usability flaws with Ubuntu as seen by the average Joe users. That is probably the best way to find these kind of issues and improve upon them. Very cool!
I think Ubuntu has really earned its title over the years. It has become my distribution of choice both for its ease of use and manageability. I use it on my server…. and when I get a gaming console and give up PC gaming (for the most part)… I will probably use Ubuntu on my desktop… making my life completely Unix based… with Windows on the side in a virtual machine.
I have upgraded my server’s hardware!
The server went from this:
-Pentium III Slot 1 550Mhz
-3×128MB SD-RAM
-160GB IDE Hard Drive
-10/100 Ethernet
-Trident Graphics Card
-Ubuntu 7.10 Server Edition x86
To this:
-AMD Athlon64 3000+ 1.8Ghz (With C’n'Q)
-2×512MB DDR-266
-200GB IDE Hard Drive
-10/100/1000 Ethernet
-No Graphics Card
-Ubuntu 7.10 Server Edition x64
This, obviously, will provide much better performance for everyone, especially me. In addition to that, it is also rolling on its own dedicated UPS, which should allow it to stay up longer than it did when it was sharing an UPS. The goal with this rebuild was to bring better performance at the roughly the same power usage. Although I don’t have the tools to easily test its usage, it is my expert opinion that the power consumed by this server is approximately the same as the last server. This means it brings better performance per watt which makes it more green than the last server.
As always, you can check out the server status here.
